Center the 5-1/4" square template on point on the scenic farm print fabric and fussy cut: 12 house and barn motifs
From the red print fabric, cut: Forty-eight 2-3/8" x 5-1/4" strips
From the yellow print fabric, cut: Forty-eight 2-3/8" squares
From the chicken wire print on red ground fabric, cut: Forty-eight 3-3/4" squares; cut each square diagonally in half to make 96 triangles.
From the medium print fabric, cut: Forty-eight of Piece 1 (click to see & print out)
Directions
Note: Use a 1/4" seam allowance throughout. Sew pieces right sides together with raw edges even, using matching thread. Press seam allowance toward darker fabric. When machine quilting, use maching quilting thread in both the top of the machine and in the pattern pullout section. Applique pattern does not require a seam allowance. When using Sullivans Quilt Basting Spray, please follow the manufacturer's instructions on the back of the can.
Block Assembly
1. Referring to the Block Diagram, sew a red print strip to two opposite sides of a farm print square. Stitch a yellow print square to each end of two more red print strips, then sew these strips to the remaining sides of the square. Press all seams. Repeat to make a total of 12 bordered squares.
2. Sew a chicken wire print triangle to each side of Piece 1 (note print direction) for a total of 48 triangle corner units. Press. Again referring to the Block Diagram, sew a corner triangle unit to each side of each bordered square. Repeat to make a total of twelve 12-1/2" squares quilt blocks.
Sashing and Borders
1. From the solid black fabric, cut seventeen 1" x 12-1/2" strips, two 1" x 37-1/2" strips and four 1" x 45" strips. Sew two fo the 1" x 45" strips with short ends together to make one long strip. Repeat to make one more long strip. Press seams open. With the seams centered, cut these strips into two 1" x 50" strips.
2. Cut ten 1" squares from the red print fabric. Following the Quilt Layout Diagram, sew the 12-1/2" square blocks, black sashing strips and red sashing squares to complete the quilt center.
3. Cut two 4" x 38-1/2" horrizontal strips from the farm print fabric and sew two the top and bottom of the quilt center. Cut two 4" x 51" vertical strips from the farm print fabric and four 4" squares from the yellow print fabric. Stitch a yellow square to each end of the farm print strips, then sew these strips to each side of the quilt center to complete the top.
4. For the backing, cut a 36" x 60" piece from the farm fabric and four 6-1/4" x 45" strips from the solid black fabric. Sew two black strips with short ends together to make one long strip. Repeat. With the seams centered, cut each black strip to measure 6-1/4" x 60". Sew a black strip to each side of the farm print piece for the backing. The backing should now measure 48" x 60". Press seams open.
5. Center the batting on the wrong side of the pieced quilt back, then center the quilt top on the batting. Use red thread to machine quilt in the seam around the red print strips in each block. Use black thread to machine quilt in the seam on each side of the black sashing strips. Topstitch around the outside of the quilt 1/8" away from the edge. Trim backing and batting even with quilt top.
6. For the binding, cut five 1-1/2" x 45" strips from the solid black fabric. Sew the short ends together to make one long binding strip. Press one long side under 1/4". Sew the binding around the quilt, mitering the corners and overlapping the ends. Turn the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place.
7. Cut a 3-1/2" x 12" strip from the red print fabric. Trace 4 hearts on the wrong side of the fabric and cut out. Spray the appliques on the wrong side of the fabric with Sullivans Quilt Basting Spray as per can instructions. Center a heart in each yellow square and smooth in place. Buttonhole stitch around each heary using black machine quilting thread.
